The Mississippi Association of the Deaf (M.A.D.) was founded in 1894 by a group of alumni of Mississippi School for the Deaf. These Alumni were concerned about the deaf being excluded from decision and policy-making processes affecting their own destiny. M.A.D. is an affilate with the National Association of the Deaf (N.A.D.), which since 1880, is the oldest and largest consumer organization of handicapped people in the United States. NAD, other state associations, and MAD have been designed to bring together deaf and hard of hearing people to improve their lifestyle and opportunities. A private, non-profit organization, MAD is supported by members and other interested groups. MAD is a statewide organization maintained independently of state government for deaf and hard of hearing adults; parents of deaf children; organization of, for and by the deaf; professionals who work with deaf and hard of hearing children and older students in the field of deafness; and other interested individuals. The purpose of our organization is to empower Deaf people to have control and influence over things affecting their everyday lives. MAD's publication, MADNews, is distributed in March, June, September and December. It is informative and stimulating. It also provides a vital link of communication to keep members informed of the current activites of MAD and deaf organizations. We welcome your comments on any topics printed in MADNews.
